There are many books on watercolor and painting out there, and it can be quite overwhelming to find a good written resource. On this page I will share my thoughts on the books I have personally bought. This is not an exhaustive list because I try not to buy too many, but I hope it might be helpful. 

Before I dive in, here's a few things I think about when looking for a book:

  • First, I look for books created by an artist whose style aligns with my own natural tendencies or reflects a direction I want my art to go. I made the mistake a few times of getting a book that others loved, but then I never used them because the artist's style was too far off and it wasn't interesting to me. Look for book reviews or walk-through videos to get an idea of what paintings and style are featured in a book.
  • Second, I try to go into book buying with a specific skill or goal in mind, and look for books that address that concept. For example, when I wanted to learn more about masking and layering, I found a book where someone specialized in that area. 
  • Third, I remind myself that in most cases only a portion of the book will be extremely useful. For most of my art books I find about 20% of each one to be the most informative. Knowing this going in makes me
